FREE DOCX SHARING CHECK

Check and Remove Metadata from a Word Document

A Word document can retain identity and editing history outside its visible pages. CheckBefore shows the supported fields and separates safe cleanup from changes that need your decision.

Processed locally in your browserYour original stays unchanged. The file and filename are not uploaded for a standard scan.

SUPPORTED COVERAGE

What can be detected

  • Author, last modified by, title, subject, keywords, category, created and modified dates
  • Company, manager, template, and custom document properties
  • Comments with supported author, date, and text previews
  • Insertions, deletions, moves, formatting changes, and hidden text markers
  • Detectable external links, embedded objects, VBA, ActiveX, and digital signatures

CLEAR NEXT STEPS

What can be cleaned—and what needs you

Can be removed

Author and document properties

The cleaner removes supported author, last editor, title, subject, keyword, category, and custom-property values from a separate copy. The rescan shows anything that remains.

Can be removed

Comments and internal notes

Supported DOCX comment records, references, relationships, authors, dates, and replies can be removed from a separate copy.

Review required

Revisions, hidden text, links, objects, and active content

These findings stay visible because accepting revisions or changing embedded and active content could change meaning, behavior, or signatures.

EXAMPLE — NOT A LIVE SCAN

Example findings

Real results use the same label-and-value structure and depend on the file you select. These examples do not claim a risk score or finding count.

How it works

  1. SelectChoose a supported file from this device.
  2. UnderstandReview the evidence and the stated scan limits.
  3. CleanCreate a separate copy with only supported items removed.
  4. RescanCheck the latest copy again and review anything left unchanged.

HONEST BOUNDARIES

What CheckBefore does not do

  • It can flag supported personal-information and secret patterns in extracted DOCX text, but it does not redact, rewrite, or anonymize body text.
  • Tracked changes, hidden text, external links, embedded objects, macros, ActiveX, and signatures are reported for review rather than changed automatically.
  • A completed check covers supported DOCX structures only; it is not a guarantee that a document is safe to share.

Frequently asked questions

Can CheckBefore remove the author from a Word document?

It can remove supported Author and Last modified by values from a new DOCX copy, then rescan the copy. Other detected app or date properties may remain visible for review.

Does it remove tracked changes?

No. Accepting or rejecting tracked changes alters the document, so revisions are detected and left for your decision in Word.

Does it inspect the words in my document?

It checks supported DOCX structures for metadata and hidden information, and flags supported personal-information and secret patterns in extracted body text. It does not redact or rewrite the document body.
